Negotiations Underway For Canelo Vs. Munguia Showdown in May

Negotiations are reportedly underway for a highly anticipated bout between undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia on May 4th. If the match comes to fruition, it has the potential to be a major blockbuster event in both the United States and Mexico.

Salvador Rodriguez from ESPN Knockout has revealed that discussions are ongoing for a potential clash between Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) and Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) in May. If finalized, this matchup could be available on Amazon Prime PPV and potentially on DAZN. "Jaime Munguía returned to the negotiating table for a possible fight against Canelo Álvarez in May," stated Salvador Rodriguez on X.

Fresh off a notable ninth-round knockout victory against John Ryder on January 27th, Munguia delivered a respectful callout to Canelo in the ring, showcasing sportsmanship rather than resorting to disparagement. This unexpected development indicates a shift in Canelo's plans, diverting from the anticipated match against Jermall Charlo in May, contrary to earlier speculations. This alteration in Canelo's agenda could potentially open doors for WBC interim super middleweight champion David Benavidez, who, along with his father Jose Sr., has long advocated for a showdown with Canelo.

A Canelo vs. Munguia clash would undoubtedly create waves in Mexico, boasting extensive fan bases for both fighters. However, Munguia's popularity in the United States is not as widespread among casual fans who may not have witnessed many of his fights. While amassing an impressive 43-0 record with support from Golden Boy and his promoter, Munguia has faced criticism over his perceived weak resume. Notable wins during his 11-year career include victories over John Ryder, Liam Smith, Gary O'Sullivan, and Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

If the proposed Canelo vs. Munguia bout materializes in May, it sets the stage for a potential face-off between Canelo and Benavidez in September—a logical progression. However, an alternative scenario could involve Canelo choosing to face Jermall in September, leaving Benavidez in limbo. In such a case, Benavidez's prospects would hinge on the hope that Canelo might consider a matchup in 2025, potentially involving a new contract with PBC if they opt to extend their association with the Mexican star.
